Why Couples & Marriage Counseling?
Maintaining a loving, fulfilling, stable relationship in today's world is no small feat. Over half of first time marriages end in divorce with the rate only increasing in subsequent marriages. Long-term romantic relationships require constant intentionality and effort and it's easy to miss the mark as life gets busy, children might be added to the picture, and little hurts and conflicts add up to big relational wounds. Having a meaningful partnership can significantly increase everyday satisfaction but resolving conflicts and getting on the same page can be challenging; Couples counseling can help!
What can you expect from Marriage Counseling?
Couples counseling will focus on serving and supporting the relationship rather than just two individual clients. After building trust and understanding your unique needs as a couple, we will focus on some of the following goals:
-
learning and practicing effective communication skills
-
building conflict resolution strategies
-
understanding relational patterns and establishing new healthy habits
-
processing and healing past and current resentments
-
centering the couple relationship regardless of busy everyday life
-
Understanding and meeting each other's needs to promote individual and relational growth
What if one partner is hesitant to do Couples Counseling?
It is very common for one partner to be more interested in beginning the coaching process than another. That's okay! It often takes a few sessions for both partners to feel comfortable and open in the coaching sessions. Booking an initial session and having space to get to know the coach and ask questions about the work can often relieve any concerns or hesitations. Many couples will put off beginning coaching work if both partners are not fully committed yet this can lead to a huge detriment in the relationship and put the couple at a more disadvantageous place to repair from. If you have a hunch that couples work might be beneficial for your relationship, the time is now! Asking the more hesitant partner to participate in just a few sessions to begin is often an effective and meaningful step in the right direction.
